Spanish for Foreigners Course

Our Spanish for Foreigners Course

Enjoy the sea, the warm Caribbean breeze, the food, the music, while learning Spanish

The UTB’s Open Access Language Centre offers you its unforgettable course entitled, “Cartagena Hispana y Multicultural”.

Overall the course is divided into three levels, the first or basic level is designed to enable foreigners to communicate and therefore the emphasis is on speaking. The second or intermediate level will allow them to begin to express ideas, write short paragraphs and interact more significantly with native speakers. The third or advanced level is designed to prepare students so that they can develop their ideas orally and back up the written word in such a way that they can participate in debates, congresses, interviews and give presentations.

Complimenting the program are various cultural activities and visits to touristic and historical points of interest of great importance to Cartagena de Indias.

OBJECTIVE:

To promote the Spanish language, Hispanic culture and the peaceful Colombian lifestyle by way of geography, culture, Cartagena’s curiosities in order to increase and promote an international understanding and open dialogue with people of other nationalities.

METHODOLOGY:

The methodology applied throughout this course is based on communication and combined with socio-cultural elements that will enrich the learning process and the development of Spanish as a second language. In addition the course is full of authentic material with opportunities to apply what is studied and put this new knowledge into real situations where an interaction with native speakers will play a vital role in the relation between student, teacher and the community beyond these academic walls.

AIMED AT:

Foreign students of any nationality that wish to acquire or strengthen their knowledge and abilities to be able to communicate effectively in the Spanish language.

ACCOMMODATION:
Students have the opportunity to choose between home-stays with a family from Cartagena or in hotels or hostels located close to the University.

25 hours a week: 20 hours in the classroom from Monday to Friday from 8am to 12 midday and five hours five hours of trips to places of touristic, cultural and recreational interest.

SUMMER COURSE

Every year under the banner “Escuela de Verano” the UTB and the Open Access Language Centre offer students a special summer learning Program.

The full summer course lasts 4 weeks. Classes take place from Monday to Friday from 9am to 12 midday in June and July.

Also included in the 4 weeks are tours of touristic sights, recreational activities such as dance classes, cooking classes and the fantastic “Paseo en Chiva” (night-time party tour in an open bus) as well as all of the cultural activities put on by the Escuela de Verano.

TAILOR-MADE COURSE

Reviews

DIRK MUELHLENHOFF, Germany:

“The time I spent in Cartagena was fantastic. I learnt a great deal about Colombian literature thanks to my teacher Mariana de Castro. I also studied Spanish grammar and colonial history. I had to work very hard in class and do a great deal of homework, but I feel that I learned a lot.”

SUZANNAH ROBERTS, United Kingdom

My experience in Cartagena has been excellent. Both the University and the family with whom I lodged were very friendly and they worked very hard to make my stay a pleasant one. I learned a great deal about the culture and society of Cartagena in class as well as on our day trips. The course was nicely varied so that there was a good balance between linguistics and the cultural side. The tours within the city and beyond were incredible. I really want to return to explore the region further.

RYUOSHIN IKEDA, Japan.

I made many friends with whom I am still in contact. I believe that I speak better Spanish now than before. I want to return soon to visit my friends, thank you.

JAMES KELLY, Scotland

My stay in Cartagena was excellent. The people were kind and generous. The city and the region nearby were diverse and beautiful. My favourite trip was to Tayrona Park which gave us an idea of rural Colombia. My host family was excellent and her two maids were kind and the food was delicious!

STEPHEN HULL, United Kingdom.

I would like to thank all of the teachers and staff at the UTB. We have spent three spectacular weeks here. The experience with my family has been pleasant and I have been made to feel at home here. I would recommend the course to any student.
